Boston golf weather guide
Boston golf has a defined season, and New England golfers make the most of every good day in it. The trick is knowing when spring really arrives, how the ocean changes the weather, and how fast fall daylight disappears.

Season by season
Spring (March–May): opening day and patience
Courses open as the ground thaws and dries, usually in March or April depending on the winter. Early spring is often cool, damp and windy, with soft conditions. Afternoons can feel very different near the coast: a sea breeze off the still-cold ocean can drop temperatures sharply even on a sunny day.
Tip: inland courses often run warmer than coastal ones on spring afternoons. The GWI comfort score picks up those differences when you compare courses.
Summer (June–August): the heart of the season
June is often ideal: warm, long days and lower humidity than later in summer. July and August bring more humid stretches and occasional heat waves. Thunderstorms often build in the afternoon, especially inland. A morning or early-evening round usually avoids the worst of both.
Tip: late-afternoon "twilight" tee times are popular in summer. Check the thunder risk for the full round, because summer storms can fire up during the back nine.
Fall (September–November): the best of New England golf
September and October are many local golfers' favorite months. The air is crisp and dry, the courses are in good shape after summer, and the foliage peaks in mid to late October. The challenge is daylight: once clocks fall back in early November, the sun sets around 4:30 p.m.
Fall coastal storms, including nor'easters, can bring a day or two of heavy rain and strong wind. They usually blow through, with clearer weather behind them.
Tip: in November, choose late-morning or midday tee times. GWI lowers the score for rounds that would finish after sunset, so late starts are flagged automatically.
Winter (December–February): off-season for most
Most courses close or move to limited winter play once snow and frozen ground arrive. Some stay open for walking on mild winter days when conditions allow. Winter is the time for simulators and planning next season's first round.
The ocean effect
Massachusetts Bay has a big influence on Boston weather. In spring and early summer, the cool water keeps coastal areas cooler than inland towns, sometimes by a lot. In late fall, the relatively warm ocean can keep coastal frost away a little longer. Wind direction matters: an easterly breeze off the water feels raw early in the season, while a westerly wind brings warmer, drier air from inland.
Notable public courses
- George Wright Golf Course (Hyde Park): a Donald Ross design that opened in 1938, owned by the City of Boston. It is known for rugged, rocky terrain and has hosted the Massachusetts Amateur.
- William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park (Dorchester): opened in 1896 and considered the second-oldest public course in the United States. It sits in the Emerald Necklace park system and is open year-round when the weather allows.
